Camphill Village West Coast Website editor guide

Updating the website yourself

A short walk through the editor, where you post news and events, set the notice for the next market, and send the newsletter. No developer needed, and nothing you do here can break the website.

Posting an update, start to finish

Seven steps, from signing in to seeing your update on the live website. This is the whole thing.

  1. 01

    Open the editor

Go to camphill.lumanaire.co.za/admin in any browser, on a computer or a phone. Bookmark it, you will come back to it often. If you are not signed in it takes you straight to the sign-in screen.

Once the website moves onto camphill.org.za this becomes camphill.org.za/admin, and the old address will still work.

  2. 02

Your name is hannah, all in lower case. It is not your email address. Your password was sent to you separately, not in this guide. Type both and press Sign in.

You stay signed in on that device for 30 days. On a shared computer, use Sign out at the top right when you are finished.

    Find your way around

The main screen has two things on it: The next market at the top, which is the green band on the market page, and News and events below it. Newsletter sits in the bar across the top, next to your name.

That bar is always the way back. Camphill website editor on the left returns you here from anywhere.

  4. 04

    Start a new update

Press Add an update, on the right of the News and events heading. Updates already posted are listed underneath it, newest first, each with Edit and Delete.

  5. 05

    Write it

Title is the headline. Keep it under about seventy characters so Google does not cut it off. Date is the day you are publishing. Type is the little label on the card: News, Event, Harvest or Market.

Summary is one or two sentences. It is what shows on the news list and what Google puts under the link, so write it so it makes sense on its own, without the rest of the article. The update itself you write normally, leaving a blank line between paragraphs.

  6. 06

    If it is an event

Further down there is a box headed If this is an event. Fill in the date of the event and where it is, and the update lifts to the top of the news page as an upcoming event. Once the day has passed it settles back into the ordinary list on its own, so there is nothing to tidy up afterwards.

Leave both empty for anything that is not an event. Where is a short place name, like The Craft Centre, not a full address.

  7. 07

    Save and publish

Press Save and publish. A green message confirms it. Open the website in another tab and refresh: your update is on the news page, usually within seconds.

If something is not right, the screen tells you what to fix and keeps everything you typed. You never have to write it out again.

The other screens

News and events is where you will spend most of your time. These are the rest.

The next market

The green band at the top of the market page. Almost always you leave the date empty, because the website works it out on its own: first Sunday of every month, skipping January. Fill it in only when a market moves, and clear it again afterwards. Untick the box over the January break to hide the band altogether.

Your updates

Everything you have posted, newest first, with Edit and Delete. Underneath there is a grey line reading "The 4 updates that came with the website". Those four are built in and cannot be changed from here. Ask us and we will change them for you.

Newsletter

Your mailing list, replacing Mailchimp. Import your Mailchimp export, write an issue, send yourself a test first, then send to everyone, and afterwards see how many opened it and what they clicked. It is not switched on yet, and the screen says so until we finish connecting it.

Top bar
About the newsletter numbers. Opened and clicked count people, not clicks, so one person opening it five times is one. Treat opened as a rough guide only: Apple Mail and some company mail servers load the tracking image on the reader's behalf, which counts as an open even though nobody looked. Clicks are the number to trust, and the one worth taking to the board, because a click is somebody who actually came to the website.
